Mosasaur (Prognathadon) Jaw on Custom Stand-Morocco

  • $3,800.00

This lower mosasaur jaw is from the Cretaceous phosphate beds of Morocco.  This is a nearly complete dentary of the mosasaur species Prognathodon anceps.   I purchased this jaw field prepped.  I have completely removed the jaw from the matrix and mounted on a custom quilted maple base that I made (included).  The jaw is saturated with a stabilizer, however portions are thin and fragile.  The jaw measures 32 inches long and is about 9 1/2 inches at the widest including the teeth.   This is from a large mosasaur.  The thickness of the jaw ranges from 1/8 inch to 3 1/2 inches.   Teeth average 2 to 2 1/8" long not including the root.  On average the teeth stick up about 2.75 to 3 inches above  the jaw.  The maple base measures 16" x 6.5" x 2.5: thick.  Total height of the piece including base is 20".  There is repair to several teeth and some filler on cracks in the teeth.   All teeth are original to the jaw.   There was missing bone near the back of the jaw and is filled with matrix.  Several replacement teeth are visible below the jaw line.  Several of the teeth show feeding wear.  I left some matrix on the back to add stability.  Its difficult to tell from the pictures, but there appears to be a broken tooth wedged into the back of the jaw.  There is also a small mosasaur tooth in the matrix on the back that is not from this piece but I left it in the matrix.

This makes an amazing display piece and attracts a lot of attention.  Email if you have any questions.
