Partial Mosasaur Jaw on Custom Stand-Morocco #2

  • $1,500.00

This partial mosasaur jaw is from the Cretaceous phosphate beds of Morocco, species Prognathodon anceps.   I purchased this jaw field prepped in a plaster jacketed matrix.  I have completely removed the jaw from the matrix and mounted on a custom  walnut base that I made (included).  The jaw is saturated with a stabilizer.  The jaw measures 15 inches long and is about 7 1/4 inches at the widest including the teeth.   The thickness of the jaw ranges from 1/2 inch to 2 inches.   Teeth average 1 1/8 to 1 1/2 inch long not including the root.  On average the teeth stick up about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches above  the jaw.  Walnut base measures 13.5" x 5.5" x 2" thick.  Total height of the piece including base is 13.5".  Condition is how found.  The jaw has been offset by the jaw width during burial.  There is matrix present in cracks. A pile of fish vertebrae are present  on the back where the offset is present.   I left them as part of the matrix to help hold the piece together where it is offset.  There is also coprolite present on the back.  The matrix in which these pieces are found is loaded with various fossils.  I have filled some cracks near base of teeth with matrix, but all teeth are original and no other restoration has been done.  Several of the replacement teeth are present below the root line.  This makes a great display piece.   See high resolution pictures for details and email if you have any questions.
