Ptychodus mortoni Lower Jaw Plate

  • $2,500.00

This is a very nice, near complete  Ptychodus mortoni lower jaw plate.   The plate was found articulated with only a portion of teeth weathering out.  The teeth that have been added back can be seen on the back of the plate where no matrix is present.  Note there are several teeth facing backwards on the back, this is how the piece was found.  Eighteen teeth from the upper plate are also included, but the majority of the upper plate had weathered out and washed away. The plate is held together with a penetrant/stabilizer with very little matrix on the back.   The teeth are in amazing condition compared to how they are most often found (more similar to the teeth from the upper plate (white)).    The plate measures approximately 7.75" long by 6.75" wide.  The largest teeth are about 1 1/8" by 5/8" wide by 3/4" high.  See high resolution pictures for details. The plate is from the Cretaceous Niobrara chalk of western Kansas and is a piece we have collected and prepared ourselves.   Please email with any questions.
